Top Reasons to Enroll  in the Longshoremen Disability Income Insurance  Policy

1) To Be Eligible for ILA Disability Retirement Benefits You Must Meet Certain Criteria

You are entitled to apply for a disability benefit from the Plan if all of the following requirements are met:

• You are totally and permanently disabled.

• Your disability occurs after you have reached age 40 and have completed 15 full or one-half years of Benefit Service.

• You are not a “vested terminated participant*”.

• The Trustees receive satisfactory proof of your disability.

*A Participant who incurs one or more breaks in service as a result of illness which began before the Participant attained age 40 and while the Participant was employed in the industry shall not be a vested terminated participant by reason of the breaks in service.

2) Coverage for Partial Disabilities is Limited

In addition to other eligibility conditions for ILA and SSDI total disability retirement benefits, you must be unable to perform the critical or essential elements of your position. This means that if you are able to perform some, but not all, of the critical or essential elements of your position, you may be ineligible for benefits. Although each claim must be evaluated individually, in many instances, a claimant under the Longshoremen Disability Income Program will be able to obtain disability income benefits even if he or she is still able to perform some of the critical or essential elements of his or herposition.

3) Income Replacement Benefits are NOT Taxable

The disability income benefits provided by the Longshoremen Disability Income Insurance plan are not taxable to a member, which means a greater amount of income replacement for members when they need it most.

4)  Weekly Health and Welfare disability benefit does not meet your needs.

The HRSA-ILA Short Term Disability Benefits are provided to protect your income in the event that you are unable to work due to a non-occupational accident or sickness.  The amount of the weekly benefit is based upon work hours and credits earned during the prior Contract Year.
